Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon 2012

:sigh:

Penang Food Trip: Day 1

I went to Penang with my colleagues, and started our journey in the morning 730am.
Once we reached Penang, we stopped at Genting Café @ Penang Island Glades for our lunch. Our fiest Stop for the Penang Food, we are coming FOOD!!

One of the favourite foods in Genting Café is the Chee Cheong Fun. The shrimp sauce (haeko) is fabulous! Though I don’t really like Chee Cheong fun with haeko, but this is good. It is creamy and does not produce fishy smell.  The Chee Cheong Fun costing only RM1.70 for the small portion that has two rice noddle rolls. Some other recommendable food would be Curry Mee, Loh Bak, and Char Keow Teow with duck egg. There is a Muachi stall outside the shop. The muachi taste good compare to those in KL (RM1.50). The food there satisfies our hunger.

After filled out stomach, we were heading to Tune Hotel for check in. I booked online for a Double Room (RM63.53/night) with 12 hours air-conditioning (additional of RM13.49 to the hotel room price).Check out is at 10am, everything in your room will shut down automatically. Check-in was quick for us, just need to hand in the print out of the reservation and ID for verification. We need to pay RM 10 as refundable deposit for 2 rooms.
The room was rather small but cozy. No windows, just a large mirror to give the illusion of a bigger room. Seriously, the bed is superb. It didn’t give me neck pain the next day. Because I had a bad experience in Bali, the bed giving me neck and body pain after a night stayed. This Penang trip also marked my first experience stay with Tune Hotel.

After checked in, we were heading to Gerai Padang Brown also known as Dato Keramat Stalls. We ordered Seafood Popiah, the only popiah stall that includes real crab meant as one of the ingredients. Two pieces are the minimum order priced at RM2.80. The special about the popiah is done in a wet way, the filling of the popiah includes shredded omelette, fried shallots and Hoisin and Chili sauce on the paper thin crepe. Personally, the popiah taste fishy. We also ordered the famous Pasembur (Indian Rojak) and ice kacang. The ice kacang priced RM2 was not bad.

Our next destination is Kek Lok Si Temple. I have not been up there 5 years. Surprisingly, the traffic was pretty smooth. The parking cost RM4. We need to pay RM entrance fees (2 ways) to view the Guan Yin Statue. The bronze Guan Yin statue was built to replace the previous white Guan Yin statue. The actual bronze was actually completed quite some time. If you refer to my photos, the ornate shelter just completed, and some other constructions work still carry out.

New Lane Street is truly a street food center in Penang and the place is jam packed with many hawker food stalls and food hunters (we are the food hunters too). You can almost all of the Penang famous food there.

KF recommended us to try the Chu Chap Cheok (Pork innards porridge) and the Char Keow teow.  The street signature is the Chu Chap Cheok with all the pig spare parts hanging in the stalls. This Penang Char Koay Teow using charcoal fire. This is a very popular stall in New Lane, we waited more than 30 minutes just for a plate for Char Keow teow. There are fried oyster stall here, the taste is average. However, the oyster is quite big and fresh though. We also ordered Ikan Bakar, Curry Mee and Apom Manis. I just like the Curry Mee compare to the one in Genting Café. We also tried the Belacan Fried Chicken. Special Chicken.

After that we proceed to Kimberly Street for our food again. It famous with the dessert, Loh Chicken Feet and Koay Chap.KF shared with us the Almond Tea here is the best. But unfortunately none of us like Almond. This uncle dessert sells almond paste with crunchy yau char kuay, gingko, lotus see, red beans and dried longan soup only. His soup is tastier and smells very fragrant. The chicken feet are fantastic!! YUMMY…
